Custom Corten Steel Enclosure – Septic Tank Cover Project Near Geelong

April 12, 2026

We recently completed a custom corten steel enclosure designed to conceal a septic tank system on a rural property near Geelong. This type of project sits within our broader architectural metal cladding and custom fabrication work, where we design, manufacture and install tailored solutions for residential and rural builds.

What started as a purely functional requirement became a standout feature through thoughtful design, in-house fabrication and the use of corten steel — a material that continues to improve visually over time.

The Brief

The goal was simple: conceal the septic system while keeping the structure clean, durable and suited to the surrounding landscape.

Rather than using a temporary or purely functional solution, the brief evolved into creating something that would feel like a considered part of the property — not something hidden away.

Why Corten Steel Was the Right Choice

Corten steel is increasingly used in architectural projects for its durability and distinctive appearance.

Unlike standard steel, corten is designed to develop a natural weathered finish. Over time, it forms a stable, protective layer that eliminates the need for painting or ongoing maintenance.

This makes it ideal for rural environments and exposed areas where long-term performance matters.

The evolving patina also allows the structure to blend naturally into the landscape, particularly in coastal and regional settings around Geelong, the Bellarine Peninsula and the Surf Coast.

Fabrication Completed In-House

All panels for this project were fabricated in our Lara workshop.

Having full control over fabrication allows us to:

  • Manufacture panels to exact dimensions
  • Maintain consistency across all components
  • Reduce delays often associated with external suppliers
  • Deliver a cleaner, more accurate finished result

Each section was designed to suit the layout of the septic system while ensuring access and functionality were maintained.

Installation & Site Outcome

Once installed, the enclosure transformed the area completely.

What would typically be an exposed and purely functional part of the property is now a clean, structured feature that complements the surrounding environment.

As the corten continues to weather, the appearance will evolve further — deepening in tone and adding character over time.

A Practical Solution That Adds Value

This project is a good example of how practical requirements on a property don’t have to compromise the overall look.

With the right material and fabrication approach, even service areas like septic systems can be integrated into the broader design of a home or rural property.
