Hepburn Springs Retreat features COR-TEN® Standing Seam Cladding

October 6, 2015

True Blue Roofing have recently completed the metal roofing components of these three magnificent units which feature COR-TEN® Standing Seam cladding in Hepburn Springs, Victoria. Hepburn Springs is located within a region that contains Australia’s largest concentration of natural mineral springs, 4 kms north of the larger city of Daylesford.  Hepburn Springs offers an attractive and scenic destination for visitors, surrounded by thick forests, gullies, and a multitude of mineral springs.

COR-TEN® is a weather resistant steel sometimes referred to as weathering steel or Corten.  Due to its long-lasting nature COR-TEN® is becoming increasingly popular in Australia for architecturally designed contemporary homes and public buildings for roofing and wall cladding finishes, it is available in a range of different profiles.   COR-TEN® corrodes under the influence of weather, becoming a beautiful rusty colour that varies according to the climate, from rich oranges to deep reddish browns; it tends to get darker with age.

The COR-TEN® Australia website explains the weather resistance and how it works as follows:

WEATHER RESISTANCE – HOW IT WORKS

The atmospheric corrosion resistance of weather – resistant steel is based on the chemical composition of the steel.
Under the influence of weather conditions a dense protective patina layer composed of corrosion products is formed on the surface of the COR-TEN® steel. The protective layer (Patina) develops in approximately 18 months, at first, the protective layer is reddish brown but gains a darker hue with time.

The “Run off” (leaching) of COR-TEN® cladding will slow down and eventually stop entirely, However our cladding specialists will suggest the inclusion a small gutter in the cladding detailing to take the “run off”, or the installation of on-porous materials below the cladding.

The three retreat buildings are set on a hillside overlooking tranquil bush, they are appropriately named after the vibe of the setting; Tranquility, Serenity and Evoke.  They feature a Colorbond Trimdek profile roof with Colorbond barge, Colorbond S/Line gutters and 90mm PVC round downpipes. We also installed sisalation sarking in the ceiling.
